Inter-Island Flights offer spectacular scenary of Fiji's hundreds of islands, islets, and reefs systems. SigaSiga Sands Resort is located on Fiji's second largest island, Vanua Levu. You'll need to jump a flight to Savusavu. This is an hour from Nadi and 45 minutes from Suva. What a wonderful way to experience Fiji!
Ferry
Ferry service between Suva and Savusavu is 10-13 hours and travels mostly at night. So there’s not much light to enjoy the scenery. The cost is about FJ$50/pp. We recommend flying to Savusavu. You'll enjoy phenomenal scenery and it only takes an hour. There is usually more than one flight per day. The morning flight typically leaves about 8:AM, so it’s reasonably close timing to most international arrivals into Nadi.
There is also ferry service between several other islands including the closest one, Taveuni. You can rent a car from a couple different agencies in town. Or, for about the same price, you can hire a taxi and drive-on the ferry over to Taveuni. There is a list of our favorite Taxis in the Villa. While Taveuni is Fiji Islands’s third largest island, it is quite small. You can drive around it in a couple hours. Swimming in one of their stream waterfalls is great. This makes for a fun day trip or you could stay at the oceanfront Garden Island Hotel, which is reasonably priced. (many of the boutique hotels on Taveuni are quite expensive). You can buy tickets at the Bligh Water Shipping office in Savusavu.
Massage
SigaSiga has our own licensed resident Massage Therapist. At a cost of only FJ$50 per hour, it is highly recommended you not pass this up. We have a professional massage table in house. You'll love it! There are also luxury Spas at the nearby resorts to accommodate you for deeper therapies.
Security
Crime in Savusavu is almost non-existent. For your special jewelry or passports, there is a safe in the Master Bedroom closet.
Transportation:
While travelling to Fiji annually since 1987 (for 6-12 weeks at a time), I've only rented a vehicle two times for a total of less than a week. Taxis are abundant and cheap. The drivers are polite, usually early, carry your bags, pay for the fuel and will change the tire if needed. And, you get a chauffeur
You can have a taxi for the entire day and go across the island and back-all for nearly the same price as a day's rental car that you put petrol in to.
There's also the Buses for about $F1.50 each way. They go by SigaSiga hourly. Of course, they stop anywhere, anytime.
IF you provide us your Savusavu airport arrival information, we will arrange your transport to SigaSiga on arrival. If one of our favorite taxi drivers doesn’t find you by name within 5 minutes of your arrival, simply catch another taxi. (about F$10 to SigaSiga) Remember, SigaSiga is pronounced “sing-a, sing-a”. If you can say it, the driver can find it
We recommend going directly to your home-away-from-home before going to town for groceries, etc. It’s recommended that you first unload your bags at the house and enjoy an orientation to the house contents and amenities. Your driver will be happy to wait if you wish to go to town. This way you’ll have a better idea of what to shop for.
Fruit and Vegetables
All fruit and vegetables grown at SigaSiga is organic. We seasonally have papaya, banana, coconuts, breadfruit. Many other fruits and vegetables are available in town at the farmer’s market (open Mon-Sat) and there are imported fruits available at a couple of the bigger supermarkets in town.
Power
All power in Fiji is 240V. Plugs have two diagonal flat pegs angles up at each other.
Taxis
Beginning in 2009, Taxis are required to use a meter. The charge between SigaSiga and Savusavu town is less than FJ$10 (as of 1/11). This makes it affordable to order takeaway meals from the restaurants that can be delivered by one of our trusted taxi drivers.
Caretaker Staff Meals are available. This is not an official “Resort” function. Guests arrange with the girls on their own and show their appreciation as they see fit.
Fully Equipped Kitchen: Of course, your SigaSiga kitchen is fully equipped for most any occasion. Includes: Large Frost Free Refrigerator, Gas Range, Microwave/Convection Oven, Coffee Maker & Grinder, Blender, Toaster, and a full range of kitchen and cookware.
Groceries/Restaurants
Savusavu is a quaint little town (11km/7 mi from SigaSiga) that includes about a dozen restaurants of Indian, Fijian, and Western cuisine. Town restaurant meals average around F$5-15. Nearby Resorts offer more extravagant fare with prices to match. The other resorts prefer you make a reservation so they can be sure they can accommodate additional orders.
Medical
The Savusavu hospital serves as the general doctor for the community. There is also the Savusavu Medical Center, a privately funded clinic that offers in and outpatient services and a pharmacy.
Mosquitos
Like anywhere, their population is directly relative to the rainfall. Repellant and hiking shoes are recommended for our nature walk which shouldn’t be missed. I spray a generous amount on my clothes. Repellant is readily available in town if you don’t bring any with you.
Nadi Hotel: There is a medium priced hotel right opposite the airport entrance which works just fine for us. It's called Raffles Gateway. They've got two pools, live music, a restaurant, etc. As a back up, the Tanoa is 5 minutes further toward Nadi and fits a similar description.
Prawns – Yes, Fiji fresh water prawns are delicious! You can usually find them in town by the kilo.
